In 2019, inspired by Eos, the Greek goddess of the Dawn, I began to think about how I could design a collection around the mythical goddess Eos. Let me tell you a bit more about the symbolic meaning behind this design.
Eos was often described as bringing hope and rejuvenation to all living mortal beings as they woke up in the morning, filled with energy and ready to resume their work and journey and life in general. This idea really resonated with me. I love the idea of a fresh start, a new beginning, every single day. The famous sonnet by William Wordsworth also came to mind.
‘Composed Upon Westminster Bridge, September 3, 1802’
Earth has not anything to show more fair:
Dull would he be of soul who could pass by
A sight so touching in its majesty:
This City now doth, like a garment, wear
The beauty of the morning: silent, bare,
Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie
Open unto the fields, and to the sky;
All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.
Never did sun more beautifully steep
In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill;
Ne’er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!
The river glideth at his own sweet will:
Dear God! the very houses seem asleep;
And all that mighty heart is lying still!
These beautiful words, along with the legend of Eos, became the starting point of the new collection and I set about designing and creating a handmade piece of jewellery to represent the sentiment of the dawn and new beginnings.
As with most of my work, I like to bring an art deco style to each piece. Combining the classic art deco sun beam pattern, the circular disc- a classic silhouette representing the full sun, and a soft satin finish evoking the soft hazy sunlight at dawn.
I designed the collection with three different levels, each level representing morning, noon and night as I wanted to include the entire day from start to finish.
The satin finish and tactile feeling has a soothing effect, and reminds you that tomorrow’s another day!
Wether you’re drawn to this collection for the symbolic meaning, the art deco style, or simply a small slice of escapism to a Greek island this summer, let it be a reminder that there will always be a new beginning with renewed energy. What will your new beginning be?
